Emmerich looked at the two boys and pondered for a moment. “Two minutes. That is all I can give you,” and chuckled, sitting down himself.
“Reactor Room? What kind of thing is this?” Hunter asked.
“A nuclear reactor. This facility is quiet energy consuming, leading to an ugly electrical bill and media suspicion if they used commercial power. A company HQ doesn’t always have a secret lab under it, mind you. So Giavoni went to the length of building a reactor to power this entire facility and the building above it.” Emmerich said. “The fuel for it they can name as resources for research. This way, they not only have a more sufficient power source, but also enjoy the low taxes offered by the high-tech-promotion policies of the government. Giavoni is quite sly, and knows their ways well.” Emmerich answered. “Right. It is time for us to carry on again.”
“Okay...” Hunter said as he rose reluctantly.
Karrson’s legs felt like lead, the rest now enhancing his feeling of weariness, now that the adrenaline wore off. They continued on again, only to find that after another flight of stairs they were hindered once more. The stairs were blocked by a construction fence. Beyond it the stairs abruptly ended, and only the deep abyss of the stairwell remained. No more stairs could be seen from that point. A notice hung on the fence: “Staircase refurbishing, sorry for your inconvenience”, with a Giavnoi trademark next to it.
