Because duty was laid upon you. The memory of that strange dream in the warehouse came back to him. Because you know, if not you, who? You may fail in the effort, but if you give up, no one else will succeed you. You were chosen of random, nearly, yes, but still it was you who was chosen, not others. You, and only you. Even if the hope of success is weaker than the waning moon, you still have to try. If there is hope of restoring things to normal, then you must try. The fate of what is left of mankind is held in this company: if by the sacrifice of them, they could bring back the normal lives of millions more, it was worth a try. No one deserved this, and none would have ever wanted such fate, but it fell on them, so what must be done, must be done...and they desperately needed success, though odds be against them, and hope darkens.

“I support opening the door,” Karrson said silently. “This is a bet I will make, though I am no gambler.”
Hunter raised his hand also. “For the door.” Sanders followed. “The door is our chance.”
Clare still stood silent by the car. Clark hesitated, then raised his hand. “Try it.”
