“Hold on! Keep firing! Almost ready!” Emmerich shouted.
Too late, Karrson thought, as he shoved his second-to-last magazine into his rifle. He could already hear the sound of the creatures pounding on the sides of the hull. They were now shooting whatever was blocking the window, having to have retreated. They kept firing, but their numbers only increased, and were not exhausted. They now came from all sides, surrounding their aircraft. Clark and Sanders had joined in, now that combat has become close ranged. He saw one of the things nearly climbing through one of the window. He swung his gun around and pulled the trigger. It clicked empty. He coursed aloud, took the sling from which the weapon off of himself, and rammed the butt off his rifle into the thing’s head. It drew back but did not let go. He rammed it again and again, until if finally fell out of sight. Just as he loaded his last magazine, the engines roared and aircraft jerked upward, pressing him to the floor. The dust disappeared from sight through the windows.
At last. They were airborne.
From earth to sky, thus ended their nightmarish journey of the Giavoni underground facilities.
