Karrson knew, that though from above the city was dead, it in fact was not. New life will have sprung up and multiplied, and they dwell in the shadows of what once belonged to man. Perhaps no humans live in Capterpool now, but other things will have come, and settled.
Karrson sighed and removed his gas mask. “I think it is time that we lost these.” He began to remove his hazmat suit. Hunter nodded in approval. He was sure that they had been exposed to an excessive dose of radiation when they were underground. Besides, they had sweat a great amount in it. It felt suddenly very cool to be out of the stifling suit, in fact so cool that Karrson shuddered. All he wore now was his shirt and trousers for school. He rummaged in his rucksack and pulled out a school uniform jacket. He kept his gas mask.
“Doesn’t really up the looks,” Hunter said, putting his on, “but it’ll do.”
“Jeez,” Sanders said, pinching his nose in a mocking fashion, “you guys really smell.”
“You try getting stuffed in a hazmat suit for two days of intense action, and see if you’ll smell like bathroom soap when you get out of it.” Hunter said. “I bet you yourself ain’t no better, it’s just that you’ve gotten used to your own smell.”
