The Pathless on Paths---------Chapter VI part 1(13)

Slowly they checked each stair-well, Emmerich reading the signs and maps besides them, searching for the right one. Karrson felt tense, like every muscle in his body had tightened up. His hands shook as he held the rifle, which grew heavier than ever in his hand. He scaned the opposite wall with his light, cursing the darkness and the flashlight for limiting his sight to a small round lit patch everywhere he turned, while all else fell into blindness.
“Okay. In here---” Emmerich motioned for them to enter a stairwell, but was interrupted by Hunter.

“You two had better take a look at this...” He said, he moved his light alone the bottom of the gap. They saw, that in the gap there lay many bodies. Broken bodies. Some with appendages missing, some with their entrails spilled, others plainly a gory mush. That part of the tracks and the ground was covered with a thick layer of dried blood. Karrson felt his stomach flip, and he nearly threw up in his gas mask. How many more things did the darkness mask from them? So close it was to them, yet they did not notice it. The death of some tens of people. A pile of man-flesh. Horrible to behold. At least they did not have to endure the smell, Karrson thought.
