“Yes. We still have some way to go before Weathertop. It would have been faster and all the more safer with air or ground transport, but for the moment, we go on foot.”
He pointed towards the woods in the distance. “We were heading north, but the crash sent us off course to the east a little, I think. Now we strike north, for the little distance east will not matter too much. We may end up far from our desired direction when we leave these woods.”
“Is there no other way around, to evade this ominous forest?” Clare asked. “We may never make it to its end, dangers unknown are hidden inside.”
“We could, perhaps do east or west and find a way around, but the way is long, and our supplies are insufficient, so I do not think such a detour will help us to any significant extent: the same unknown danger lies in every path.”
“I...will abide then, though I do not think this rout is best choice.”
With that they decided upon their course: to head into the woods, strike north as accurately as can manage, until coming to the woods’ end, which should not be too far. They divided their minimal supplies, so each carried little and traveled light. Karrson, Hunter, and Emmerich split up what was left of the rifle ammunition: one magazine in the gun and two spares each. Clark’s shotgun had only one last reload left, and pistol ammunition was far from abundant.
