“What have we now?” Hunter muttered to him, “an unwelcoming forest that we must enter. I am totally enjoying my life right now.” He walked in behind Emmerich, and Karrson followed him, with the rest of the company together.
Immediately ensuing their entry, the trees closed in about them. It darkened, even darker than the cold and weak light outside: it looked as if it would go dark within a few minutes, if the world was still normal. Karrson looked back, and found that the gap they had entered through seemed to have closed behind them. It conveyed a message: no going back now, as you have already entered. They advanced forward, with Emmerich picking a path among the haphazardly grown trees, for they could follow no beaten path. The ground was covered in fallen leaves, out of which the very last drop of greeness had been drained, leaving only a decaying gray shell, and gray mud. The light mist began to thicken, rising gradually from ankle height to waist height, until it shrouded the air completely. Within a few minutes of marching, Karrson was nearly drenched. The air grew cold and moist. Under the influence of the fog and the trees, every sound was clocked, save that which was made by themselves. The distant screech of unknown birds dissolved itself into the air, sounding from every side, fading in and out, undefinable. Karrson gripped his rifle tighter.
