“Emily, I chose you, because out of all our company I trust you the most. My brother made a wise pick, and time has proven to me that you are worthy of the duty laid upon you. I know you will not let me down, not now, and not in the future.” He turned and disappeared without a sound.
Karrson nodded slowly, to no one in particular. He saw no reason why Emmerich trusted him so much. He says Mr. Noah chose him because he was worthy of it, but how did Mr. Noah know? Karrson had not known him for long. They first met on the opening day of his school. He was the first, and only teacher he had met that day that actually taught their class. Merely a kindly old man, Karrson had thought no more of him that day. Their second meeting was during their first history lesson, and their third was the encounter involving the recorder.
The recorder! He had nearly forgotten about it, the recent events had overtaken his mind, leaving no more room for this little thing. Had he lost it? He was told to keep it safe, always! He rummaged in his rucksack with his heart in his mouth, and as he had hoped, he withdrew it from inside. A wave of relief passed through him. He studied it in his hand, as he had done when he was given it, recalling all the things that were related to it. Those surges of memory made these three days seem longer than lifetimes. He pressed the power switch for a few seconds, the screen lit up. He looked at the small screen. The battery was still nearly full. This served both as a comfort and a warning: he was sure that it would be impossible to find a charging port for any type of electrics now, and he would have to conserve. He had a feeling, of unknown origin, perhaps merely his mind making a judgement in accordance with his recent experience, that this recorder, was more than it seemed.
