“He is right, Emily,” Emmerich said. “Why take unnecessary risks when a safer way can be contrived? We must adapt, but that does not mean shooting everything in our way.”
“Yes...fine. Then we must not alert the thing, and stay away from it.”
The company extracted themselves from the ditch, heading deeper into the woods and farther from the path. They would have to continue in the woods for a long distance, for they could not return the path without being noticed, as the path rounded no bends here. As soon as they entered, the forest closed about them once more, and the memory of the clear and treeless path seemed absurd. The thing that worried Karrson most now was the matter of finding the path again. If they had continued for to long, and missed a turn that the path made, they may never find it again. The road was their best chance in finding their way out of the woods, for they believed that this path, judging by its wear, was likely a oft used path for passing through. The path’s general direction for the moment led uphill in a straight line, and if they continued upwards the chance of them losing it was not high, but who knows where it would lead after reaching the hilltop. Perhaps they could head to the top and have a better sight of that. Dry leaves cracked beneath his feet. The encounter with the odd creatures drove sleep painfully from his head, leaving him now to wonder how long it was, exactly, that they were underground. The Radiation had spread far, and so did the dust. The massive dust clouds covered the sky, concealing the sun and stars and moon, a curtain of grayness. It was thinner now than it was when Karrson first witnessed it, but it was likely that they would not get any thinner, for no dust now fell, leaving only what the air could hold suspended. The sunlight was weak and cold, and the air could no longer be warmed. No crops could now grow in natural conditions, unless it be a mutated species that require little light, or offered artificial lighting and heat,, which would need a great amount of energy to sustain. The earth and soil was polluted, and would be rather unfit for normal plants. One must find uncontaminated soil, if one wished to plant the crops of the past. Perhaps whoever is out there has already found a new way of growing necessary plants, or found some replacements. Yes, whoever is out there. The Earth is too large, and the population humans too big to have all died out. He believed there would be survivors, and many, only separated and isolated, alone and unconnected. They will have learnt to live in this new world, to live with the Radiation, and the opportunities and dangers it brought.
