The Pathless on Paths---------Chapter VIII

Apprehension
A twig cracked beneath Karrson’s feet. He adjusted his grip on his rifle, and followed Emmerich forward. They were close now, so very close. He just hoped that they arrived soon enough.
After a short journey up the north-south flowing part of the river and seeing the aircraft sweep over above them several more times, Emmerich had pulled the speedboat over by a patch of accessible riverbank and they had disembarked, following Emmerich into the woods once more, now heading east again. They had run nearly the entire way, following Emmerich, who only occasionally stopped to verify their route. It seemed that he was more familiar with this part, and the woods perhaps were not as distorted, for they were less dense and oppressing. They had to retrace their steps once, but in comparison to their former experiences in the previous part of the woods this was a tremendous improvement, Emmerich was impatient, however, for he often ran his fingers through his hair and paced around angrily every time they stopped to determine the right route, though they were only very brief halts. Soon, the ground beneath them had begun to climb, and Emmerich had said that they were at last drawing near.
