The Pathless on Paths---------Chapter VI part 4(7)

All the company could do now was to hold the hoard of spiders off and wait until the webs behind them burns out, then fly. Gunshots hisses ripped through the silence of the corridor around them relentlessly. The huge arthropod stood amongst the hoard, like a mountain in a sea of hills. Suddenly. It raised itself on its legs, its stomach bent beneath its body.
“Look out! It’s about to shoot something!” Hunter said.
A jet of white liquid shot from the end of its abdomen, but the company formed a gap on its trajectory, and it passed through, missing and landed on the burning webs. It too ignited, Karrson discovered.

They kept firing, and the great spider slowed, hissing with malice, pestered by their feeble attacks, for though they were far from lethal, they caused building uncomfort. It leaped at them, quickly shortening their distance.
Finally, the last layer of cobweb burnt and smothered, and the corridor grew clear behind them at last. The company sprinted away, slipping in the water. The great spider sprang after them. Jets of white gooey liquid flew above their heads or landed about their feet, near misses that only slowed them down, for it took an effort to pull their legs free of the sticky trap.
