A loud crack and flying pieces of wood and steel told him that the door had burst asunder. The couch was thrust aside with a screech. In seconds it would appear before him...
Karrson jumped slightly as the thing landed a short distance in front of him. A distance perfect, Karrson thought, for it to leap again. However, It did not jump immediately. Karrson tried his best to stand firm as he was hit straight on with a jet of white goo. He scrubbed his visor clean of it. They now confronted each other silently. Karrson held his breath. Adrenalin coursed through his body, and all his mind was now bent upon the black-brown mass before him, observing its every motion. It hissed and stomped its legs, making ready for an attack, but it hesitated. This prey it faced did not flee like all else, but held his ground. A fruitless effort it be, it knew, yet something did not feel right. It finally disregarded its sense of foreboding, and tensed its rear legs for a leap.

The Pathless on Paths---------Chapter VI part 4

The mass before him lurched forward, and Karrson knew it was time. He jumped back and swung to the side, catching the ladder with his other hand. The brown shadow missed and with a crash collided with the farther wall of the elevator-well, and fell down, its legs withering to catch the walls to slow its fall. This was his only chance, Karrson knew. He found footing and threw himself back into the room. He swung his rifle forward, took aim, at fired at the oiled steel cords that held the elevator in place. The sparked and snapped, and the elevator fell from above, a brief blur as it passed the doors, the rails lighting the well up with sparks, and smashed into the monster beneath it, bring it down alongside. A shrill screech rang up from below, echoing in the well, cut short by a tremendous boom, as the elevator pressed it against the ground seventy meters away.
