The Pathless on Paths---------Chapter VII part 4

Karrson and the rest of the company clustered in the center of the boat, so as to avoid getting splashed by the acidic spray kicked up by the repeated bouncing motion of the boat that came from the sides. They had chosen the correct vehicle for speed, but not exactly comfort, Karrson thought as they rocked up and down, the boat crashing its way through countless waves. His stomach turmoiled, and he was growing dizzy. He began to think, as he tried to overcome his uncomfort.
North, they should head north, but they were now heading west, driven off their path. Emmerich had decided to head further upstream to see whether the river would turn in their desired direction, for their progress would be a great deal safer and quicker on a boat. It was verified that a distress signal had indeed been sent, thus they did not dare to risk a delay any longer at the building. In which way Giavoni would come, if at all, they knew not. His filter was now 90% spent, but he did not take it off. The others had also found gas masks, though of the conventional kind, and replacement filters. They would hold out for a while, at least. They were now down to a company of five, but in their luck they had not become the prey of the many things that inhabited the woods they had crossed, and how fortunate that was was beyond measure, he assumed. He still needed to find out more about the recorder. Sanders’ gun wound was not so serious, but he is now incapable of carrying anything too heavy in his left hand, so his use of his new rifle was difficult. He looked rather pale, but was otherwise alright. “Just bad luck, or maybe good luck, I guess. But it sure damn hurts as heck,” he had said, smiling bitterly. Karrson himself was covered in blood, which alarmed his companions at first, but after a brief explanation things were cleared out. “You, my buddy,” Hunter said with a light in his eyes, “are more than meets the eye.” He felt for the matte handle of the dagger again, now sheathed and attached to his belt. He felt even more sick somehow, achieving the opposite of his initial intention.
