“No...” Karrson breathed.
The man walked back into the craft, and the hatch-door shut behind him. The engine noise grew deafeningly loud.
Karrson finally blinked his eyes free of dust, and looked up. The craft was ascending slowly. Engine noise also came from outside the encampment, and looking back Karrson saw the craft that had landed outside also rising up. They were being left behind.
He looked over, and saw Hunter laying face down in the dust. There was a sharp click from above that attracted Karrson attention. He looked up at the ascending craft again, and saw the machine gun turret turning beneath its belly. It aimed its fat multi-barrel at the captives still kneeling on the ground. Karrson could not breathe. He stood himself up again just as the machine gun began to roar, dull yet deafening thuds coming from over head. He leaped to the side, as blue-traced rounds flew over his head and collided with the ground around his feet, bursting the dusty soil. He could hear the many screams and shout of the others, but he had no attention to spare. He sprinted towards the gate, attempting to retain his balance with his arms still bound behind his back. The gate was with groping reach now, only a few more seconds...
