“There can’t possibly be bridges across this, right?” Sanders said.
“This greenness,” Clare said, staring at the water, “It reminds me of algae. Perhaps the acid is a byproduct of the mutated algae’s life activities.”
“Maybe,” Hunter said, “but how are we gonna get across? Algae is not a problem we can solve, is it? Look at how much there is here! There must be something feeding it!”
“Exactly!” Emmerich said. “This is the very reason I propose that we head upstream. Most likely, the source of its nutrition comes from human pollution upstream. If we were to find a way across this river, it must be there. This is our best current chance, for now our advancement has been limited to the choice between east or west, that is upstream or downstream. I doubt the odds of going down stream will be any better.”

“You take it for granted that its source of nutrition comes from humans, but if not?” Clare voiced out his doubt. “Anything is possible now, our imagination must not be limited by the knowledge of our past lives.”
“You are correct, Clare, and I have thought of the possibility that it comes from non-artificial sources. If we really were to meet some organism that had the ability to produce such a shocking quantity of nutrition for the algae as....say, a waste, we may be doomed, unless it be another plant! But I myself see no other option that prevails, when put in comparison with this one. If you something in mind, we should hear it.”
