“That is a shrewd guess,” Clare said, as he surveyed the scene with interest. “Distortion is known to cause temporal and genetic shifts, but space in not excluded.”
“This world just keeps offering us eyeopeners,”Emmerich said. “Night has now fallen. I do not feel safe for further advancement, and I believe neither do you guys. Shall we make camp, a little further in from here? I do not trust the water’s side, for this river and its patterns are unknown to us. We can find a way to cross this tomorrow. I am sure we all yarn for rest.”

The company slept in a circle. Karrson and Hunter volunteered for the first watch. They were inside a shallow cave they had found, more of a depression in a stone wall than really a cave, but at least it offered the protection they sought, and concealment. They had no tent, and in fact had little gear that was meant for camping: Emmerich never thought they would get into the plight they were in now. This will prove ill for them, Karrson expected, for he was quite sure this will not be the only night the would spend outside. They dared no fire, wishing to remain unseen. Still, with the wide cave mouth simply opening into the woods, Karrson did not feel safe at all. If only he could fine something to block this entrance.
