Karrson leaned his head against the window. He could hardly believe the thing that had stopped their car was once a human, just like them. An ordinary person, who perhaps said goodbyes to family members before they went to work in the morning, only to never return. A person who had the ill luck of working within blast range of Ground Zero, and the ill fortune to survive the mutation, and live on, as a monster that men once believed only existed in nightmares, losing all but their life and body. All because they were unlucky, and fate betrayed them. Worsewas the thought that perhaps in the near future, all that would walk the earth would be them, and other grotesque beings, and all the prosperity, beauty and wholesomeness of humans gone, buried under thick layers of gray dust, twisted into indescribable shapes. No. That must be prevented. Distortion must not prevail. He must find Dr. Kater, and assist him to activate the counter measure, while the world slowly fell into ruin and madness. Darkness will fall upon men, and only he and this companions would know of light, but light can penetrate even the most stifling darkness, and darkness can only quail and withdraw in face of light. Their task lay bare now in front of him: find the spark of humanity’s salvation. The enemy was clear now to him, too. The men of Giavoni, driven by an unknown purpose, and Distortion, as it gradually infected the Earth. All seemed clear indeed, for when he looked to himself again, he saw a weak teenager holding a rifle. Sure, he had worthy companions, a good friend and an skilled fighter with a misty past, but they were still no, match against the obstacles that lay in their bogy and difficult path. Maybe the rest of this task had better be left for greater men to finish, and not some random high-school kid an undercover history teacher picked. Perhaps he could settle down again after finding Dr. Kater, and return home, if his still existed, and face what the future would bring to all, may it death or agonized survival. His part would soon be done.
