She disarmed him, and raised her arm as though she were going to kill him in the same way she hoped to dispatch François’s killer. Instead, as she gazed at her father’s face, her eyes filled with tears and she flung herself into his arms crying over and over, “Why? Why? Why?”
Renaud held her gently, relieved to finally hear her voice again.
“Oh, my child...”
“Why didn’t I arrive a few minutes sooner?” She sobbed. “I heard the killers leave... If I had arrived sooner, François might still be alive! He wouldn’t have been alone to face them... At least I could’ve died with him! I don’t want to live without him! I don’t want to! Why did God bring François to me only to have me live without him? Why offer me that happiness only to take it away so cruelly? Why show me heaven only to shove me into this hell?”
