He left her there, alone, surrounded by the scattered weapons.
“Have you lost your mind?” Exclaimed his wife. “You’re leaving your desperate child with all those weapons! But she might turn one upon herself! I can’t allow you to encourage my child to kill herself!”
Renaud stopped her instantly. “She needs to find her will to fight. If she doesn’t get up, it’s because her soul is already dead!”
“So you’ll let her body die!” Cried Julie, her eyes filling with tears. “What kind of father are you?”
Renaud took his wife in his arms and gently replied, “Have faith... Our daughter is stronger than you think...”
He returned the following morning to the armory and challenged her once again to a duel. And the next day... And so on for the rest of the week with no success.
Then, at the end of the week, just as he had given up all hope, she came to her senses. Arrows jutted from the various targets, the dummies had been gouged and sliced by various blades. Renée stood with a foil in her hand, her eyes burning with hate. Her father took a foil in his hand and stood ready... Renée was an accomplished fencer without match; far better than many men. Renaud had to put all of his energy into the match. He couldn’t lose too quickly so that his daughter could work out some of the anger she had been smothering inside of her all of this time. With her foil, she was nothing but hatred and fury... And her Father knew that with this, she would come back to life. She raised her head, and started to fight.
