Emily's heel(7)
Sarah gives her an unconvinced smile, but doesn't press the issue. "Okay. Well, Daddy said he'll pick me up tonight, so we're gonna have fun. Did you want to come? You know he's taking us to that movie place that you like."
Emily's stomach clenches. The last thing she wants to do is go somewhere with David, so instead, she smiles and says, "No, thank you. I'll be here when he gets back."
It's a lie. She doesn't want to be alone tonight. She doesn't want to face what she thinks she knows, and she definitely doesn't want to go anywhere that involves David. He'll make her uncomfortable.
He always makes her uncomfortable.
Her mother is obviously upset with her, but Emily can't blame her. She hasn't spoken a word to David since they got back from Hawaii, and she suspects he didn't speak to her either. She misses talking to him. It helps ease her mind knowing he's there, in their bedroom, next door, but the rest of the time he's gone and the silence just makes her feel worse. Worse and stranger and lonely.
