Later the Eastern Jin dynasty sent officials to recruit soldiers in Liuyu’s hometown. Liu Yu joined the Beifu Army in order to get enough to eat and to support his family. After joining the army, because of training efforts, practical and capable, he quickly got the recognition of the general Sun WuZhong, and promoted to the position of Sima very soon. Sima position was responsible for punishing those who violated orders and military regulations. Although he had no rank, he was also a grass-roots officer.
In November 399, in the third year of Long 'an of the Jin Dynasty, Sun En raised his troops in Kuaiji (now Shaoxing, Zhejiang Province). The eight southeastern counties responded, and the ruling and opposition parties were shocked. The Court of Jin dispatched General Xie Yan and former General Liu Aozhi to suppress the rebellion. Because of Sun Wujie's recommendation, Liu Yu joined the army under Liu Aozhi's command. After the Eastern Jin Dynasty, Canjun was only a kind of general's staff, with the rank of seven grade officers. However, it was much higher than Sima, and Sima had no rank. For example, Tao Yuanming served in the town army as Canjun, and Fan Ye, author of the Book of the Later Han Dynasty, served in Liu Yikang's army as Canjun. After Sui and Tang Dynasties, the title of Canjun gradually became a local official of low rank. For example, Du Fu served as a champion of Hua state as Canjun. Poet Bai Juyi served as a member Canjun in the household of Jingzhao Prefecture. At the end of the Northern Song Dynasty, the local army Canjun was abolished and only the military Canjun was established. In the Yuan Dynasty, the title of Canjun was completely abolished.
