“Thank you,” I said quickly. I wasted no more time, eager to get out of there, and grabbed my bag off the floor and jumped out of my seat, hurrying toward the door.
“I’ve kept you after,” she called. “Do you need a ride home?”
“No, I’ll manage,” I called back.
“Before you go,” she said, stopping me once more. “I want to know why you let them pick on you.”
I looked down at the floor then, trying to come up with an answer—any one I could. But only one came to mind.
“If they’re picking on me, then they’re not picking on anyone else.”
I didn’t let Mrs. Reed get in another word. Despite knowing I was about to get soaked, I was outside in a matter of minutes, putting as much distance between me and that conversation as I possibly could.
With my head bent low, I jogged out into the rain. It was coming down hard. Like, I-might-drown-standing-up hard. In minutes my hair was plastered against my forehead. But being wet was nothing compared to how uncomfortable that conversation had been.
