“Cole’s right,” Morgan agreed after a moment. “Practice got canceled for the first time in forever. We’ve got to go celebrate. Nate, take his backpack.”
“Hey!” I protested as he pulled my backpack off my shoulders. I held on to one of the straps, but Morgan twisted my wrist until I was forced to let go, and then he shoved me against the lockers on the opposite side of the hall from Cole. I bounced off them and rubbed my shoulder while I watched Nate empty the contents of my backpack onto the floor. Most of my papers slipped out of their designated folders, and unfortunately, a breeze came down the hall strong enough to scatter them over quite a distance.
“That should keep him busy for a while,” Cole muttered, pushing off the lockers and standing straight again. “Let’s go. I’m starving.”
Waiting until they were a good distance away from me, I knelt down to gather my things off the floor. Cole was right—it was a lot to pick up. I had just gotten to the last paper when a pair of purple heels came to a stop in front of me: Mrs. Reed, my English lit teacher. “Come with me,” she said, and started down the hallway. There was no way I was getting the bus now, and I shoved the last of my papers in my backpack. With nothing but a sopping wet walk home in my future, I stood to follow her, resigned to my fate. I hoped Walter appreciated my good deed.
