“Ew,” Morgan complained. “It touched me. Now I’m going to smell like a dumpster for the rest of the day.”
“Yeah, why don’t you watch where you’re going, freak show?” Nate spat.
“I’m sorry,” Walter mumbled, scrambling back up.
“You okay, man?” He took my outstretched hand and pulled himself up.
“Yeah, I’m fine,” Walter said softly.
“Come on. We’ve got to get started on that project.”
He looked a little confused, probably because there was no project, but quickly caught on as he realized I was trying to get him away from the dirtbags behind us.
“Hey, I’m not done with—”
I whirled around, facing Morgan, cutting him off completely. “I’m sorry, were you saying something? I don’t speak moron.”
He fumed at my words, though Cole betrayed him by letting out a muffled snort. After shooting a glare at his friend, Morgan returned his gaze to me, but I was already ushering Walter out toward where the buses were parked.
“Where do you think you’re going, freak?” A hand on my shoulder stopped me from going any farther. They’d caught up with me, but my plan was working: they were more focused on me than Walter now. I motioned for him to keep going without me and turned again to face the trio of boys.
