She led me to her classroom and gestured for me to sit in one of the empty desks. Mrs. Reed leaned against the front of her desk and interlaced her thin fingers. I studied her in the silence that stretched between us, wondering why she’d asked me to come here. She was a very tall, thin woman. Her nose was pointed, and her hair was mouse-brown with a hint of silver starting to show through.
“Why am I here?” I finally asked when I’d had enough of the silence.
