She counted silently in her head, as the second hand on Lydia’s watch ticked closer and closer to 12. Ten, nine, eight, seven......Three, two, one.
A white light exploded from below, but before Cecy’s senses could automatically access how large the range of the explosion was, Lydia swiftly drew a circle in midair with something she had been clinging in her other hand, and reached for Alberto, who was also reaching for her.
Their hands met amid the noise that had erupted all around them, through the clouds of dust that exploded into the air, and as the edge of the terrace began to crumble and chunks of the floor fell downwards, attracted by the explosion like steel to a magnet. Their hand clasped before Alberto stumbled on the fracturing floor, and Lydia pulled the both of them into the mirror with surprising force. The loud noise was suddenly cut off, and cold silence embraced them. Cecy had never so Appreciated the soundlessness of this kind of travel.
