"Well," my mother finally broke the silence, clearing her throat and looking down. "You guys can stay here tonight. We'll talk tomorrow morning about all of these changes you've made." Then, she turned her attention back to my best friend. "You should sleep too. You've been up late last night, you should get some shut eye."
"Okay, Mom," my best friend said obediently, standing up slowly. "Goodnight," she added, shooting me one last glare before turning to leave.

Her words rang in my ears as I lay there quietly. I couldn't let her leave without knowing why I was suddenly so moody. I had to know. If there was any chance left, I had to find out. As much as I hated my baby inside of me, it was my only chance to be free. So, I lifted myself from the bed, taking a deep breath to prepare myself for what was about to happen next. A bright light flashed across the darkened sky, causing my entire vision to blur. Before I knew it, I heard the glass shatter and my bedroom door flung open, revealing a shocked expression on my mother's face. The light stopped flashing and darkness settled over me like a thick blanket.
