And saw a person appear at the edge of the clearing.
Her first thought was that the children had burst onto the clearing at long last, followed by their parents. But this person was alone. Maybe it was Lydia, who had quietly followed them here? Or her sister, her aunt, who had probably been looking all over the neighborhood for her since she must have disappeared——yesterday? The day before last? She couldn’t tell.
But the human figure that emerged was unfamiliar to Cecy.
A dark-haired girl, her shoulder-length hair pulled back in a purple bandanna that matched the color of her eyes, moved from where she had been standing behind a thick oak, barely a few feet away. Her black boots, treading the ground, made a sound so soft against the grass that Cecy wondered whether she had practiced to do so before.
She approached Cecy and Will with a steady stride, and Cecy stared at her, taking in her attire, which seemed quite out of place on such a peaceful small town. She was in what looked like dark blue gear, tight against her body, empathizing the curves. A belt curved at her waist, but not such as the golden belt Cecy had just used——this one sported what seemed to be weapons, their blades covered in black cloth like pouches. At the edge of the belt she thought she could see a longer pouch, which was empty.
