“You ran to Esterdale and back? In a day?” Thane balked. “How are you still standing?”
River finally allowed herself to fall to her knees. “I’m not.”
“What was in Esterdale?”
“That’s where… the caravan… picked up the bear.”
“Anara?” Thane narrowed his eyes.
The ranger shot up. “How do you know her?”
“She left for the mountain at dawn with Fang and Thunder,” Thane said. “To close the entrance to the barrow.”
“No!” River tried to stand, but her legs buckled under her. “Thane, listen to me, the bear, she’s not what she seems.”
“What do you mean?” Thane felt an unnatural chill course up his spine.
“In Esterdale, there’s a cult, the Order of the Worm.” River produced a piece of parchment decorated with a strange motif: a black raven devouring an eight-pointed star, the Wolf Clan’s Star Over the Mountain.
“They seek to free the Rot from that barrow,” River said. “The bear is with them. The king sent them to open the door, not close it!”
Murmurs swept across the gathered crowd as Thane looked away, toward the mountains. “So Anara opened the door,” he said. “But for some reason, she couldn’t free the Rot from the barrow without my father.” Thane nodded to the guards surrounding them. “Take her inside to report to Freyja,” he said. “I’m going.”
