“Just now!” He gestured to the door. “Whoever it was, I think I scared ‘em off.”
“I’ve been asleep.” The ranger sounded groggy still. “Only one who’s been here is you.”
Thane pondered this, but moved on. “What happened in that barrow?” He asked.
“I don’t remember much,” Sky said, looking to the window. “There was… pain. I couldn’t control it. I felt something taking hold of us—”
“Wait, what do you mean ‘us’?” Thane cocked his head.
“Well, me and Fang, of course.” Sky suddenly sounded very concerned, looking left and right at the empty beds around her. “He’s not here?”
Thane clenched his jaw, staring ahead at nothing. His eyes shifted suddenly to the side, a terrible realization manifesting. After a moment, he met Sky’s gaze. “You should rest.”
“But where is—?”
Yet Thane was already halfway out the door. He dashed across the square, back through the empty streets, and into the castle. When he reached the Iron Guard at the entrance, he tarried.
“Prince Thane.” She nodded to him.
The young Greymane stood tall, trying to look as official as possible. “Did the bear leave the castle tonight?”
The shield maiden looked up, feigning deep thought. “Not to my knowledge.”
