And as always, she faltered just shy of my earlobe. Her breath hitched, and she leaned in to pressed her forehead into the hollow of my neck as she shuddered.

“You always apologise,” I said as I raised my hand to rest on the back of her hand, stroking her hair slowly in calming motions. “I’ve never complained.”
“I shouldn’t be doing that,” Alessandra’s voice was tight, and her aura tasted of righteous shame. “I am… I can’t do that.”
“Do you want me to stop you next time?”
I felt her tense, and I silently chided myself for saying ‘next time’ as if her promise to herself meant nothing, as if I was simply assuming that she wouldn’t be able to keep to her word. Of course, we both knew there would be a next time, but saying it aloud so brazenly had stung her pride.
“I want me to stop me,” Alessandra said finally, and I felt her force herself to relax.
“I can help,” I offered, but she shook her head.
