Chapter Four(22)
A shadow that had the shape of a human, blending perfectly into the dimming light, at the end of the corridor. Someone walking towards it unknowing. Cecy felt her eyes blink furiously as she struggled to cry out, warn the comer about the possible danger, but her voice seemed to have disappeared. She was too frightened.
‘When someone is in danger, and passerbys all choose to ignore the person, we call it the bystander effect.’ She could hear the voice of her aunt Annie in her ears, and thought despairingly that she might have been right after all.
But she had never thought she would experience it first hand.
And that split second of hesitation——
A flash of silver pierced the dark, and both were gone, in black and silver.
Another image took its place, gray waters like what Cecy had seen on the terrace, a figure on a gray something——she couldn’t make out what it was, could only distinguish the vague outline——waving desperately to another figure that was on dry land, and separating inevitably as the former drifted away......
