I started asking around the pier for help finding this "Huot Foster Home" scribbled on my paper, but hadn't such luck. Somehow this didn't bother me much, some stray stroke of optimism must have hit me.
"Hey, Xhianei, it's still pretty early, so why don't we go into the town and check it out? We'll probably have more luck finding someone who knows where this is if we ask people who actually live here, right?"
The most I got for a reply was a look of caution and a pair of cocked ears.
I took her by the hand and the two of us made way for the town just ahead. The person at the end of the pier looked at us with a raised eyebrow before examining our checkpoints to confirm where we came. With a "huh" we were let through to take on the town.
We wandered the streets and walkways, taking in this new scenery and without the proverbial rein-tugging we might expect from mom or Parana. The lack of guidance felt freeing at first, but slowly started to worry the both of us, my younger sister especially. I tried not to let on too much about it, but I could feel it in her hand. The more I looked around, the more I noticed people looking at us, and at me in particular, though I figured it was just because we weren't locals so it was unusual or something.
