Alex and Lockie said goodnight to each other and went to bed.
Lockie was woken up by someone grabbing hold of his sleeping bag. He was wide-eyed with astonishment.
It was Alex. With shotgun in his hand, it seemed that he had been a changed man.
“I am torched by a nightmare just then, but it actually tells me everything, including your true purpose.” He swallowed hard, and continued, “This place isn’t a circle or loop at all; the man is! Everyone wants to get the hell out, thus everyone fails! We’re just doing the same thing as what the person have done in advance! That’s the rule here! But if one person dies, the loop will open a breach, and that will be the chance!”
Lockie’s smile returned, and it was hideously diabolic. The face changed to a demon’s face with a fixed glassy grin.
“You can’t do that, you idiot!” whispered Lockie, and having recalled the dreadful memory a few days earlier, his face turned hysterically the picture of terror. “I have just fled from there, you can never imagine what exists in there! Never! I’ve moved heaven and earth to live on, and all I get for my pains is a bullet in the head? Are you kidding?” He grabbed Alex’s gun and they tussled over that.
