Mist was rising, and trees and shrubs began to disappear in a milk-white haze. The weather was at its worst; bitterly cold, with leaden skies that gave minimum visibility. Suddenly, in the firelight, he caught sight of a figure, something dark disappeared behind the curtain of leaves.
That couldn’t be animals. All the animals fled from the fire.
He broke into a sprint. An icy wind was whistling hard through the valley, like a furious monster’s howl as blood spurted from the gash. Flames roared hundreds of feet into the air. He tried to catch up, despite trees, undergrowth and creepers intertwined, blocking his way. Alex followed it, tracking it in the snow until finally it got tired. It seemed almost as if it was falling in slow motion.
When he approached, he wiped his eyes.
It was a man.
“You have to believe me! It’s truth!” Lockie shouted, sitting around the fire, fully conscious.
“I'm not buying any of that nonsense.” Alex grunted, looked at him in disbelief.
