The elder Greymane prince was on his knees, head bowed. His fur was disheveled, his cloak ripped and shredded. “Thane…” He looked up, shaking his head. “I had no choice.”
“You… you killed him…” Thane’s breath had left him, his knees buckling as he staggered forward. But he caught himself. His eyes narrowed — no tears came, so quick was his turn from sorrow to rage. “You killed him!”
“I said I had no choice!” Fang stood, turning to the corpse. “How do you think Hakon stopped the Rot before? He sacrificed himself, Thane. Father was weak, so I did what had to be done.”
Thane stepped forward, but Fang snarled, baring his fangs.
“Keep away, brother.” He reached out to their father. For a moment Thane thought he was going to close his eyes, still open from his dying screams. Instead, Fang’s paw wrapped around the hilt of his blade. “Anara was clear. The Greymane family is cursed. Hakon offered all of us to the Order of the Worm in exchange for the safety of our kingdom. His entire bloodline.” When Fang pulled the greatsword loose, Thunder’s blood ran freely over the floor, through the runes and channels, coursing through a series of carved grooves. Thane noticed that the channels in the floor were arranged in the shape of a coiled worm.
