The elder Greymane spat a glut of blood from his mouth and climbed shakily to his feet once more. “Brother, I—” Thane had already closed the distance, a powerful kick slamming into Fang’s chest at full force. The massive wolf fell backward, doubling over in a coughing fit, breath completely emptied from his lungs.
“Lie there a moment, brother,” Thane said, holding his paw over the bite marks in his neck. “Catch your breath.”
“I’ll kill… I’ll kill you…” Fang repeated over and over again. The purple mist in his eyes seemed to swirl with each threat. “Kill… will… I’ll kill…”
“Anara lied to you,” Thane said, circling his fallen brother to claim his sword and Fang’s own. “River returned this morning.”
“River?” Fang’s eyes focused a little. “What… did she…?”
“Anara’s no Wyldsinger. The king sent her to open the door, not close it. Her whole story, it was nothing but a lie to trick father into coming here.”
