They promised they'd see him around and wished him a happy birthday. And he believed them. He trusted his best friend with his life and he believed everything they said. They were right: he shouldn't be where he was. He should go live with his mom in Florida where she was born and raised. He should go live with his grandparents, who both loved him and needed him. He should go live with his sister, whom he misses dearly. He should stay near his parents. But he didn't.
Instead he found himself on a highway headed to nowhere. He spent all that money on a hotel, and he was stuck there, driving aimlessly across the country. He left his cell phone behind and tried to call his wife countless times. Even when he did call her, the voicemail picked up immediately. When he called again at eleven o'clock that night, he heard the recording again; she hadn't heard a single word he'd said and she hung up the instant he spoke.
