In the first year of Yongxing (304), Sima Yue, king of the East Sea, supported Emperor Hui of Jin in a campaign against Sima Ying, king of Chengdu. Zu Ti also went with the army, but was defeated at Dangyin and fled back to Luoyang. After Hui-di was held hostage to Chang 'an, Sima Xiao of King Fan-yang, Sima lue of King Gaomi, and Sima Mo of Pyeongchang raced to enlist Zu Ti, but he refused to answer. Sima Yue later appointed Zu Ti to serve in the army as a regular soldier and commander of Jiyin. Zu Ti, however, was in mourning for his mother, so he remained in mourning.
