Chapter Nine(6)
Cecy arrived at the second floor, and to her surprise saw someone else in the building that should be empty——since this was an illusion, and there was no one on her way here. She was standing at the window, turned away from Cecy, looking intently into the distance as if watching something. Cecy walked cautiously towards the person who was wearing a strange combination of dress and jacket. She was quite sure she had been careful not to make any sound, but as she neared the person whirled around, and Cecy had a fleeting look of her expression and features——was it her imagination? Or did the other girl look familiar? ——but was quickly diverted by the pulsing light she could see held securely in the arms of the other.
Though Cecy had never seen them in reality, she had watched enough movies to recognize barely the black object. At that split second, she heard the faint beeping like a countdown, her brain pulsed red words of ‘danger’ and she shrieked intuitively, pushing without thought at the figure standing in front, and proceeded to turn and run——
Except that she didn’t.
The other girl who had her back against the window stumbled backwards, taken at surprise, and where should be solid wall and glass vanished, replaced by empty air, and with a look of too late horror, she toppled entirely out of balance into nothingness.
