As to the “Misfit” in A Good Man is Hard to Find, growing up in a place with strong religious tradition atmosphere and ancient customs, the “Misfit” participated in the choir, experienced the baptism of The Second World War, witnessed the brutality of human nature, and was in prison for no reason after the War. Since he fled back to civilization, the “Misfit” was surrounded by lots of false believers like grandma, who could be a microcosm of the time. Having experienced that modern civilization under the pressure of trust risk in modern civilized society, The “Misfit” felt deep dissatisfaction and was circled by increasing desperation. So, faced with grandma’s faithful preaching, he never received any positive influence but felt full of disgusting embarrassment and commanded the whole travelling family’s death without any regret.

No doubt when writing the plot related to the violent death of the family, O'Connor was rational and sensory perceptive, so we can ensure that those chilling pieces originated from O'Connor’s consciousness. In O'Connor’s opinion, the freaks were helpless convicts under the shadow of drawbacks of modern civilized society. The significance of their existences were to witness those drawbacks and prove that the ridiculous results that freaks almost got trouble in character formation were out of the darkness at that time, which was a crucial motivation for the writer to uphold. Armed with strong social responsibility, O'Connor really fulfilled her mission to dig, analyze, and exhibit different evil phenomena in the real world. Focusing on freaks, O'Connor took the convenience of special artificial approaches to tear off the mask of evils and desperate for the essential appearance of freaks for the sake of waking up people’s consciousness.
