In China a grave is formed by a coffin underground, a mound above the ground and a tombstone. So when I read this chapter I think the plants formed a shape of mound so it's obvious to me that it's a grave.
After reading your comments I realized that western grave might not need the mound.
When author wrote this chapter I suspect he also forgot the difference of grave style. Maybe adding a description of a coffin inside those plants would be better.

我怀疑作者写这一章的时候也忘记了坟墓在不同文化是有不同样式的。也许在这里加一段“在这些植物中间躺着一口棺材”之类的描述会更好。
