They paused in front of a bookshelf at the deepest end of the library, and though the light in this room was brighter than the others, the corner was still mostly covered in darkness, since the huge bookcases seemed to have blocked the light from above.
Will took a leather-bound book from the top of something that looked like the food trolleys on trains, drew a pen from his left pocket——Cecy caught a glimpse of more than a pen and a brush in there, and she wondered momentarily how many small objects Will kept in his pocket, which didn’t look large enough to give room to the pen and brush, let alone other gadgets——and handed it to her.
She opened it, slowly turning the yellow pages. There were many names, and many pages, most of which were full, while often there were only one name on a page, each with a different number beside the handwritten letters.
Alec, No.91; Alice, No.90; Will, No.89; Kate, No.88; Simonia, No.87.......The numbers were decreasing, and Cecy still hadn’t found a blank page. Rebecca, No.20; Victoria, No.19......
She turned the page, and the page behind Victoria was empty. Cecy looked up at Will, ‘Is this a registration index or something? Am I supposed to write my name here?’
