看，你是纯洁的，美德更加强烈，
你的芬芳来自尘世的苦难。
我们为什么悲伤？让每一种痛苦都能承受
一种更大的美从草皮中迸发出来，
愿香甜如瓮中之香，
它高高耸立，守护着上帝的宝座。
希望使者，这一课我来揭晓-
“永远甜蜜，”你谦逊，芬芳的玫瑰！

Eva A. Jessye was born on January 20, 1895, in Coffeyville, Kansas. A singer, actress, choral director, author, and poet, Jessye was the first African-American woman to win international distinction as a director of a professional choral group. Jessye’s group was the official choir for the civil rights march in 1963 with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The author of My Spirituals (Robbins-Engel, 1927), she died on February 21, 1992.
