Before he could respond, she had mounted her horse with a painful frown. Stunned, he watched her disappear down the path, her hair and skirts fluttering in the wind.
Gasping for breath, Renée could barely understand her own reaction. Her cheeks were flaming and it wasn’t because of the chill bite of the wind. Her heart was racing as though it wanted to leap from her chest and she felt a strange tingle in the pit of her stomach.
It had been stupid of her to flee the way she had but she had felt so incredibly off kilter by that young man’s presence. He had plunged her into such confusing thoughts... Was this the feeling that she read of in Ronsard’s poetry? Could people truly fall in love at first sight?
Her mother had been right in telling her she was too incompetent to seduce a man... He must surely think she was some sort of hysterical lunatic to run off like that with an injured leg. And on top of that, she was positively filthy. She must have been a sight with her scrapes and tangled hair. Why couldn’t she meet men when she was properly done up?
There was such tenderness in his eyes... She could still feel the caress of his gaze upon her face and the warmth of his arms about her waist... Was this love? Would he find her again someday?
