Renée was trembling in rage. Her eyes flashed and her face grew scarlet... She could no longer contain her despise for this man who judged her as though she were goods that he thought he could buy.
“I’m not a stone, monsieur.” She spat between clenched teeth. “I don’t need to be polished and cut, or shut up in some pretty box. And even if that were the case, you certainly wouldn’t be the craftsman I would choose for the job.”

“You’re even lovelier when you’re angry.” Plessus replied with a laugh. “Your resistance only makes you even more precious.”
She had been about to spit out yet more bile when she froze. A young man had just come over and knelt before them in greeting... She recognized instantly the face that had been filling her thoughts for the past few days.
“This evening is enchanting, Monsieur du Plessus.”
“François de Montsorot, what a surprise!” replied Plessus, obviously irritated by the unexpected guest. “I had begun to think you would never honor us with your presence seeing all the times I’ve invited you without success.”
