I couldn't tell what anything was and the tags on the pane bore words I hadn't the time to try reading.
I felt a slight jerk in my hand as Xhianei spun her head to look outside, causing me to look as well. But a few meters past the door was a small group of men standing around as though waiting for something, looking in our general direction. Their collective orange eyes stung in a way I couldn't really describe.
The cashier peered around the corner before giving a hard sigh.
"This again."
He quickly slapped open the back of the cabinet and shoved as many things as he could fit into a carry-out bag, tying off the top with twine and hurriedly handing it to me.
"Huot Foster Home I'm assuming?" he asked, grabbing some kind of wooden baton from behind the desk.
"Er, yes, but how did--"
"Don't worry about it," he cut me off and pointed to a door in the far wall. "Take that exit, go north four blocks and west another two. There's a sign in the front yard. Take those and go."
