Heaven and Earth(1)
天上人间
“If our two hearts as firm as the gold should remain,
In heaven or on earth we’ll sometime meet again.”
——THE EVERLASTING REGRET, by Bai Juyi
The moon’s round orb would shine high in the sky, casting its velvety light on everything. The earth gazed at the moon and wondered that she should have all her music in her smile. And what lay between them was exactly the world of men.
Man is, as it were, sandwiched between heaven and earth, between idealism and realism, between lofty thoughts and the baser passions. Every two extremes are like two points, and a human being is always standing in a particular spot on the line connecting the endpoints.
But whatever, just follow your hearts.
On the night of Mid-Autumn Day, the ancient city of Suzhou was bustling with happiness and excitement. All the members of the family gathered to enjoy a reunion dinner, adult’s toast, child’s frolic, bringing their best wishes to each other. The moon was seen while the moon cakes was eaten. When darkness had now descended and the moon and stars shone hazily in the clear sky, the streets were packed with men, women and energetic children. The crowds, flags, colored silks, fresh flowers and lamps formed a wonderful festive ocean. Water in the moonlight autumn night, the street being a lively concert. A band played traditional stringed and woodwind instruments, and spectators danced wildly.
