Thane glanced around the hall. “Surely we just go up there and stop it.”
“You don’t stop the Rot,” Fang snapped. “Same way you don’t stop death or the sun.”
Freyja interrupted. “Yet it was sealed away once before.” She turned to the bear. “Clearly this is why you’ve come before us today?”
Anara stepped forward. “I make no promises, of course, but if I can learn how it was sealed originally, then yes… perhaps I can keep this dark presence from spreading.”
A thick silence took the room. Finally, Thunder spoke, his voice barely above a whisper.
“Are you familiar with Hakon Greymane?”
“Wolf Clan Alpha, forged the storied Hakonsbane,” Anara said, nodding respectfully to Thane’s blade. “Was he there when the door first opened?”
Thunder took a deep breath. “He was there when it opened. And when it closed.”
Long ago, Hakon Greymane, among the first Greymane Alphas, welcomed an order of mages into his territory. He was suspicious of all magick, but they kept to themselves in the mountains, so there was peace between them.
