With Thane at the fore, the quartet of shield maidens marched outside, swirls of snow blowing in through the open doorway. They filed into a dirty, narrow alleyway between ramshackle stone cottages and wooden shanties. The less-fortunate loitering nearby should have regarded the prince with surprise, but his was a sight they were familiar with.
“I’m noticing a distinct slackening of awe from the commoners in your presence,” the captain said.
Thane shrugged. “I’m a wolf of the common pack.”
“This is not your pack,” the captain replied curtly.
The snow-swept main square of Stonebluffs Village was filled with curious onlookers, caught unawares in the middle of their daily routines. The townsfolk whispered disparagements loudly amongst themselves. Thane rolled his eyes, checked his posture, and let the crowd part around him.
Ahead of them, hewn into the very mountainside itself, a castle loomed in the distance: Spire Stonebluffs, seat of power for the Wolf Clan. The ancient Hound's Tongue zig-zagged at sharp angles across a yawning chasm, the bridge separating the clan capital from the rest of the world. On the far side, through the walled city where the Wolf Clan’s noble elite held sway, sat Thunder Greymane, Alpha of the Wolf Clan.
Thane figured he would have some explaining to do.
